Help minimize impact on our environment
Recycling in general is an important way for individuals to reduce the waste they generate and reduce the negative impact. It conserves our natural resources, saves landfill space, and reduces water pollution, air pollution and the green house gas emissions that cause global warming.
Together, Reducing, Reusing, Recycling and buying Recycled products make up a comprehensive waste and resource reduction strategy that benefits our natural world.
Inside home:
- Recycle everything: newspapers, bottles and cans, aluminum foil, etc.
- Don't use electrical appliances when you can easily do by hand, such as opening cans.
- Use cold water in the washer whenever possible.
- Re-use brown paper bags to line your trash can instead of plastic bags. Re-use bread bags and produce bags.
- Store food in re-usable containers.
- Save wire hangers and return them to the dry cleaners.
- Donate used items to a charitable organization or thrift shop.
- Don't leave water running needlessly.
- Turn your heat down, and wear a sweater.
- Turn off the lights, TV, or other electrical appliances when you are out of a room.
- Turn down the heat and turn off the water heater before you leave for vacation.
- Keep your car tuned up and your oil changed.
- Carpool, if possible.
- Use public transit whenever possible.
- On weekends, ride your bike or walk instead.
- Buy a car that is more fuel-efficient and produces lower emissions.
- Recycle your engine oil.
- Keep your tires properly inflated.
- Keep your wheels properly aligned.
- Save trash and dispose of it at a rest stop.
- Think twice about buying "disposable" products. (They end up in landfills.)
- Buy paper products instead of plastic if you must buy "disposables."
- Buy energy-efficient appliancess.
- Don't buy products, such as styrofoam, that are hazardous to the environment or manufactured at the expense of important habitats such as rainforests.
- Buy locally grown food and locally made products when possible.
- Don't buy products made from endangered animals.
